Fridays at Old Main: Where Morristown's Fall Calendar Actually Happens

Three buildings on Rockaway Hills hold most of Morristown's fall community life: the Morristown Post Office, Old Main and Morristown Elementary. One volunteer group, the General Federation of Women's Clubs of Morristown, is involved in nearly every event on the fall 2026 calendar. That includes the Friday library, the breast cancer walk team and the Halloween night at the school.

Morristown has no town hall, no recreation center and no events office, so these dates usually spread by word of mouth. Here is the season gathered in one place, with the building that hosts it.

Friday is the day Old Main opens

Old Main sits between the post office and Morristown Elementary on Rockaway Hills. Starting Friday, Sept. 18, the GFWC Morristown Volunteer Library reopened there for the season. It runs every Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., except holidays. The club describes its goal simply:

"The library strives to meet the needs of the community for both adults and children."

The children's side runs that same morning. GFWC of Morristown is again sponsoring a free Children's Arts and Crafts Project every Friday from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Old Main, which also began Sept. 18. For library questions, the Wickenburg Sun lists Linda de Berge at (602) 509-1012 and club president Lucy Thompson at (602) 292-1654.

The Friday timing lines up with the school next door. Morristown Elementary School District 75 says its school and offices are closed on Fridays. So the day the school building goes quiet is the day Old Main opens to the public. Families with kids at home on Fridays have a free craft session and a lending library a few steps from campus.

Old Main also hosts the club's business. The September GFWC meeting was Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 5 p.m. in the same building.

The walk starts at the post office counter

The biggest event on GFWC Morristown's fall calendar takes place in downtown Wickenburg, but for many Morristown households the paperwork starts on Rockaway Hills. The 18th annual Walk to Boot Breast Cancer is Sunday, Oct. 18, at Stone Park. Registration opens at 7 a.m., the opening ceremony is at 7:45 a.m. and the walk begins at 8 a.m.

You can register online at wickenburgbootsbreastcancer.org or pick up a paper form at the Morristown Post Office. Team members can choose a 1-mile route, a 5K, a virtual option, or sleep in and still count as part of the team. GFWC team captain Bernadine McCollum is at 623-341-5977, and mailed registrations go to PO Box 69, Morristown, AZ 85342.

The money stays local. The Wickenburg Breast Cancer Network has given more than $280,000 to Pink Ribbon Angels, a program of the Wickenburg Community Hospital Foundation. That has paid for more than 2,700 mammograms and diagnostic tests and several hundred screenings for underinsured and uninsured women and men. The Sun reports that the funding serves Wickenburg and 12 surrounding rural communities.

On Oct. 29, the school takes over for an evening

Eleven days after the walk, the action moves from Old Main to the school next door. The Halloween Trunk or Treat and Haunted Hallway takes place at Morristown Elementary on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. It is hosted jointly by the Student Leader Team, the Morristown PTSA and GFWC-Morristown, with a costume contest.

Organizers are still looking for food vendors. Anyone interested can text PTSA President Susan Marshall at 623-694-5330 or email [email protected]. The same notice asks for unusual or eye-catching vehicles for kids to see as they collect treats. It also says ordinary cars are wanted too, so any trunk works.

The next day, the Morristown Elementary Mustangs tournament runs Friday, Oct. 30, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Wickenburg Round Gym Wrangler Event Center. The PTSA is asking for concession-stand volunteers from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Four of the five events involve GFWC or the PTSA, and three of them happen in Morristown's own buildings.

December followed the same route last year

No 2026 holiday dates have been announced yet. The most recent December announcement in the Wickenburg Sun, which matches the 2025 calendar, ran through the same three buildings.

The club met at Old Main at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 16, for pizza, salad and bread, plus a cookie exchange, crafts and goodie-bag filling. GFWC members also sold raffle tickets for a quilt titled "Born to Run Free," about 65 by 48 inches. Tickets were $1 each or six for $5, sold every Friday at the volunteer library or by any club member, with the drawing set for Dec. 16. Once again, the Friday library hours were how people got involved.

Two days later, Morristown Elementary's administration, staff and PTSA hosted "Hometown Holidays at Morristown" on Thursday, Dec. 18, from 5 to 7 p.m. The event provided food, clothing and gifts for students. Families got a "Magical Mustang Ticket" good at a series of pit stops: a hot chocolate bar, postcards to Santa, face painting, Christmas cookie decorating, a crafts table and dinner. The last stop was Santa Claus, with a 5-by-7 family photo courtesy of Jim Henty's Funtography and a gift bag for each child.

One more gathering spot is a short drive up Castle Hot Springs Road. The Circle City/Morristown Fire Department held a Fall Fest at the Morristown Fire Station on Nov. 1, 2025, from 5 to 9 p.m. It has not posted a 2026 date yet, so its calendar is the page to check.

Getting there is smoother this season

Most people reach Rockaway Hills by US 60, and that road changed this year. ADOT now lists its $10.4 million US 60 pavement rehabilitation between Morristown and Wickenburg, mileposts 110 to 121, as complete. That work was scheduled from fall 2025 through spring 2026, with lane restrictions during construction. The Oct. 18 drive to Stone Park is the first walk morning on the finished pavement.

Castle Hot Springs Road got attention too. The Maricopa County Department of Transportation says it chip-sealed select roads last fall. It came back in spring 2026 for follow-up pavement preservation on a three-mile stretch of Castle Hot Springs Road starting at the US 60 intersection, with construction scheduled from April 21 through late June 2026. The county now lists that project as complete.

The resort at the far end of that road is open year-round starting in 2026. Out-of-town guests sometimes ask about a dinner there. The resort's homepage says access is reserved for registered overnight guests ages 18 and up. Its FAQ adds that the restaurants are not open to non-resort guests.

Closer to town, the Morristown Store is the oldest building on this route with a documented history. National Register records identify it as the former Hot Springs Junction Hotel, built around 1899, later used as a store and post office, moved to its present site in 1934, and listed on the Register in 1991. Morristown's post office has been part of community life on this stretch of road for well over a century.

Over the years, I've seen a lot of Morristown's community life start at the post office counter and on Friday mornings at Old Main.
